Obviously we'll have some rules so they are as follows:
- First and fore mostly... IC only! With the exception of the original poster posting details I'd like to see this thread be the only other place that is OOC any posts without good reason will be deleted so please please do your best to maintain the atmosphere of whatever RP is going on.
- This is open to ANYONE who comes across this, from Guests to Guildies, remember to show courtesy to other people, and try and be willing to help anyone along who hasn't done this kind of this before, we all started somewhere.
- Anyone can start an Open RP thread. Simply write in OOC somewhere in the first post what you want this story to develop into, where the story begins, the weather, location and time.
- No God Modding/Power Emoting: anything that would kill a character will be mentioned by the person playing the character.
If you don't know what the difference is heres an example I found from the WoW forums.
What are Power-emoting and God-modding and why shouldn't I do it?
A power-emote is when a character makes an emote that affects another party, but does not give this other party any say in the matter or a chance to respond accordingly. For example:
Bruhnor stabs Mongo through the eye with a cactus
Power-emotes will mark you as a poor roleplayer and you will soon get a reputation in the RP community. No-one likes to have other people controlling their characters, so if you start forcing emotes upon people without giving them any chance to respond you may soon find yourself black-listed and added to their ignore list.
A God-modder is a player that has given their character extraordinary powers so that they may escape any tricky situation and are virtually indestructible. For example:
<Bruhnor is surrounded on all sides by horsemen with spears held close to his neck>
<Bruhnor snatches the spear out of the hands of the closest horseman, spins it in a 360 degree arc and knocks all of the horseman off their saddles. Bruhnor runs off into the sunset faster than the horses>
Again, God-modding will mark you as a bad roleplayer. If people know that you act in a God-like manner they will stop roleplaying with you because the outcome is both predictable and unrealistic. God-modders have no friends.
What is the solution to Power-emoting and God-modding?
Power-emoting can easily be solved by emoting something that will give the other party a chance to respond. In real life if someone was thrusting a cactus towards your eye, you'd try to duck out of the way or knock it aside. So instead of:
Bruhnor stabs Mongo through the eye with a cactus
Try emoting something along the lines of:
Bruhnor snarls in rage and thrusts the cactus towards Mongo's face
Some people may think "What's the point in that? Its obvious they are going to dodge it!". Well so be it, it is their choice not to have their character permanently maimed by a cactus. On the other hand, you'd be surprised just how many people are willing to play along. If you are clearly trying to avoid power-emoting, people will pick up on it, recognise you as being a good roleplayer and run with the emote you have just fed them.
Sometimes the outcomes can be hilarious, and it makes the outcomes of your actions unpredictable just as they are in real life.
God-modding can be solved by trying to place yourself in a similar situation to your character, and thinking how you would act. If you are surrounded on all fronts by enemies, chances are you'd be dead in a heartbeat if you made a sudden move.
Game mechanics prevent people from attacking eachother at will, but do not exploit this. Roleplay with as much realism as the situation demands. If you are walking down an alley alone and three or four large humans jump you, don't start mouthing off at them or spitting on them just because you know they can't attack you in game. - Please only one character per thread for now as multiple characters on one account can be confusing with multiple posts.
- No Meta Gaming: remember even if you know something about the character you see your character may not. If your character doesn't see the warlock casting the shadowbolt at you then he can't dodge out the way without a reason!
- Have fun! Stick to these rules and we'll all enjoy this experience together.
Take care and I hope to see you all dabbling in the art of Open RP with us!
